The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
