The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the points lead from his teammate by a single point after winning in Mexico City recently, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before sprint qualifying set to begin at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the championship fight, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in 17th place as his team ran a alternative strategy. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four early in the session. Tsunoda slid over the curbs on exit before sliding over the run-off area, and was fortunate to get away with just a slight brush of the wall. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the session, spinning around through the quick descending corner before the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th place, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's car in third, over half a second off the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
